What is an appropriate social media presence? Upon reading this question, I really reflected on the word “appropriate.” Appropriate to me is how the world views me and am a reflecting truly who I am. My values drive my actions personally and professionally. In today’s active social media generation, personal and professional are so intertwined. For example, my daughters play elite sports and their coaches have taught them to be choose wisely what they post as scouts, schools and future coaches use social media as a reference check. Once you post something on social media, it is always there forever. I googled this question and a New York Times (2021) article really hit home for me. This article shared that social media allows you to do the following:

  • Discover new ideas and trends.

  • Connect with existing and new audiences in deeper ways

  • Bring attention and traffic to your work.

  • Build, craft and enhance your brand.

Working for Alberta Health Services and belonging to the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta, it is imperative I uphold my agreed upon expectations of adhering to both organization’s code of conduct. Meaning, all my communication is required to be always respectful. Even more important is to maintain the reputation of the organization and guard confidential information. My philosophy is that before posting, is it true? Is it needed? Is it kind? Is it respectful for all audiences?

As a professional are you obligated to speak up in public? The answer to this question is yes. Our role is to share factual, correct, and researched information but not to share opinions or offer advice. For example, on Instagram, I do not represent myself as an AHS employee however I am mindful that my posts are simply my personal story. I offer no comments and during this pandemic I have shared key AHS updates in my stories to bring awareness through reposting information that the organization’s communications team has approved for public posting. This article by the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (2021) provides a great perspective on social media platform activity and “understanding legal considerations involved in social media may prevent adverse personal and professional consequences”. I would like to explore further on how to connect to new audiences in a deeper way and enhance myself professional utilizing social media platforms professionally.

The first step to help me move towards an intentional and active presence will be to create a a content curation plan. My content curation plan will be to use a combination One Drive and Diggo. One Drive allows me access anywhere and provides me access to all the different applications like sway and word doc. I use the simple method of naming my files by week and adding a description for specific work. Diggo will be a new tool I am looking forward to using. I have read and watched a few you tube videos to see how I can optimize the use for this course and for future work.

To begin collecting information, I will also need a plan to access factual information. My first step is always to google the topic. From there I read various sources and then start filtering to reliable websites and search for research articles. My next step is to talk to my network of colleagues and experts to seek their input and ask for information for me to read and learn more on that topic. For example, if I want to learn about a certain cardiac catheter, I first learn more about the catheter itself. What is it made of sizes available and cost. Then I talk to physicians to seek their input on it and the pros and cons of it. My next step is always to talk to my peers at other centres and seek their input and experience on the product. Once I have this information, I make a list of my additional questions and then look for research articles to read more about the experience and documented benefits and/or risks.

I like to go to experts and reputable sources. When filtering through all the information, I look at who shared it, how was the research/study conducted and are there reputable references linked to where the content was generated from.

When I find valuable information, I like to share it with my colleagues, peers, and staff to increase everyone’s knowledge and to also generate discussion. I store the resources as pdf documents into folders for future reference. I am looking forward to using Diggo to help me more efficient and store links. Currently I use emails and storing the pdf resources in folders on my computer.
