First Nations, Métis and Inuit populations comprise six per cent of Alberta’s population and experience significant gaps in health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations.1 For First Nations, we know that:
Mortality rates: 2X higher
Infant mortality rates: 2X higher
Mortality due to unintended injury: 2.5X higher
Female mortality due to assault: 7X higher
Opioid dispensation rates: 2X higher Emergency visits: 2X higher
Rate for emergency department visits for opioids/narcotics: 5X higher
Suicide rate: 3X higher
COPD prevalence: 3X higher
