INDIGENOUS HEALTH

First Nations, Métis and Inuit populations comprise six per cent of Alberta’s population and experience significant gaps in health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations.1 For First Nations, we know that: 

  • Mortality rates: 2X higher

  • Infant mortality rates: 2X higher

  • Mortality due to unintended injury: 2.5X higher

  • Female mortality due to assault: 7X higher 

  • Opioid dispensation rates: 2X higher  Emergency visits: 2X higher 

  • Rate for emergency department visits for opioids/narcotics: 5X higher 

  • Suicide rate: 3X higher 

  • COPD prevalence: 3X higher

We must do better…
